YWAM Sudan - Facts

Sudan is the largest country in Africa and is over one-fourth the size of the United States. Of the estimated 38 million inhabitants, 70 percent are Sunni Muslims, 18 percent are Christians and 10 percent practice tribal religions. Fifty-two percent of Sudanese are black and 39 percent are Arab. Muslims are centered in the north. Christians and animists are centered in the south or in the central Nuba Mountains. Though rich in natural resources, Sudan is ranked as one of the poorest nations in the world by the U.N. Development Program’s Human Development Index. Civil war has plagued the country for 36 of its 46 years of independence. It is the longest ongoing war in the world. As a result: • more than 300 people die each day. • the government bombed civilian targets 167 times in 2001. • 70,000 people starved to death in 1998. • 5 million southern Sudanese have no schools or health care. • 2 million people are dead due to violence, disease or famine. • thousands of women and children have been enslaved by the NIF. • over 4 million people have been internally displaced by the government. • 500,000 people have sought refuge in other countries. Lokuta is serving in Yei leading the preschool and primary school. There are now over one hundred children that are becoming educated by the school in Yei. He has a heart for the children of Sudan to be raised with a good education and with the love of Jesus in their hearts and also has a heart to work with the youth groups in the churches.
